Assignment 3
Policy one- budget cuts
The first policy that affects the public service is budget cuts. This means
that the police service is limited because they may need money for
certain investigations or better training for recruits as well as current
members of staff. Also this means that there are less officers on the
streets helping protect communities from crime such as knife crime and
drugs being sold on the streets. This means there are more people
committing crimes and an increase of stress towards other uniformed
services, such as the ambulance service because the impact of the
injuries caused by certain crimes will increase the amount of pressure on
NHS staff. This further affects society because without having police
officers on the streets preventing crime and making sure people feel
safe, citizens will not believe the police and will tend to solve crimes or
issues themselves which means crime rates continue to increase and a
rise in possessions of weapons on the streets. However, with the rise of
crime and rise of police officers being needed on the street, society’s
rate of crime being stopped is slowly decreasing as time goes on. A
positive outcome this has on society is more funding is now available to
help in other areas, such as helping the homeless find homes and jobs.
Since 2009/10 spending has decreased by 16% which means the police
have made use of their financial reserves-money set aside for
unforeseen spending. Also the closures of 400-600 stations were closed
between 2010 and 2018 and have also sold off capital assets to raise
funds.
Budget cuts also affect social services, this is because with less funding
to provide for more officers on the street and training to help with
domestic violence in households and how to detect if a child or adult is
being abused. The two work together to provide safety and assurance
towards the community and focus on local issues at hand; without
funding for officers to tackle these issues, the community will feel unsafe
and won’t seek out for help.
In my opinion, I think that the budget cuts are making it harder on the
public services because it doesn’t just affect one particular service.
