According to Zastrow et al. (2019), there are no biological markers to distinguish when middle

adulthood begins and ends. Middle adulthood will range between the age of 30 to 65 (Zastrow,

Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). As individuals age, body systems gradually begin to

decline, resulting in various health issues arising. Health concerns that arise include obesity,

diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. The significant health problems encountered are

related to the individual’s cardiovascular system; therefore, heart disease may be predisposed to

hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, making it the leading cause of death within the United States

(Center for Diseases Control and Prevention, 2020).

The prevalence of heart disease is a significant health concern a client within middle

adulthood may experience. Heart disease refers to the plaque build-up in the arteries of an

individual’s heart; as the arteries begin to narrow, blood flow is blocked or reduced depending on

the severity (Center for Diseases Control and Prevention, 2020). A risk factor for developing

heart disease is hypertension (high blood pressure), the fifth leading cause of death within the

United States (American Heart Association, 2021). Hypertension is a condition most commonly

detected among middle adulthood individuals referring to the force of blood pushing against the

blood vessels’ walls (Gray, Lee, Sesso & Batty, 2011). Individuals may experience hypertension

for years due to the lack of presenting symptoms. If untreated, it can increase the risk of

developing visual impairment, heart failure, kidney disease, etc. (American Heart Association,
