Sociocultural Differences in Perspectives on Aging

Social views on aging vary among societies and cultures. It is too familiar within a Western

civilization to view aging negatively. According to Zastrow et al. (2019), often younger adults

urge older adults to “retire when many are still productive.” As a result, self-esteem, status, and

power decline (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman, & Hessenauer, 2019) due to few social resources that

help older adults adapt to a new reality. Social resources, such as recreational programs, are

catered to younger individuals. Within certain cities, housing rates are skyrocketing, making it

impossible for older adults to live independently. Due to the social factors that contribute to

challenges, communities have implemented resources to help alleviate such challenges.

The community I reside in is predominantly Latino; therefore, community organizations

typically refer older adults to the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF). The

foundation’s mission is to improve social and economic challenges while simultaneously

preserving Mexican/Latino culture, values, and heritage (Mexican American Opportunity

Foundation, 2021). The non-profit organization provides various services to cater to individuals’

diverse needs, such as finding employment, immigration reform, low-income housing, food

vouchers, and more.

The services the organization seeks to provide immediate economic relief within the

community of Boyle Heights. Financial assistance is prioritized due to the increasing rent,

grocery/utility bills, and unemployment among the older adult population. For instance, the

foundation assists older adults in applying for Medicare/Medi-Cal, Supplemental Nutrition
