Relationship Analysis

According to social psychologist Arthur Aron, humans are motivated to have

relationships with other humans by our desire to blend with other people and to share the

knowledge, insights, and experiences of the other person so that our own experience of life is

broadened (Aronson, Wilson, & Sommers, 2019).

Relationship and Attachment Style

I will be using a past romantic relationship that I was in when I was younger. This

relationship started when I was 20 years old and lasted for four years.

Similar to how culture shapes how we think about and experience love, so does how we

interact with our parents and caregivers in the early years of our lives (Aronson, Wilson, &

Sommers, 2019). This interaction determines our attachment styles. Attachment styles are the

expectations that we develop regarding our relationships with other people base on the

relationships we had with our caregivers (Aronson, Wilson, & Sommers, 2019). My attachment

style in this particular relationship was most like the avoidant attachment style because even

though I was interested in this person, I was hesitant to allow him to get close to me due to my

fear of him not being as interested in me. I wanted to be in a relationship with him but did not

want to express that desire (Aronson, Wilson, & Sommers, 2019). His attachment style was more

of a secure attachment style because he was confident in our relationship and was not worried

about whether I would reject him (Aronson, Wilson, & Sommers, 2109).
