Self-Discovery
Our self-image is both a conscious and subconscious way of seeing ourselves
(Collingwood, 2020). Our self-image is formed through our interactions with other people. We
often can't help but compare ourselves to others, such as family, y, friends, co-workers, and so
on (Collingwood, 2020).
Introspection
I learned about myself that I tend to put too much thought into what others think of me.
I realized that I could be very shy whenever I meet new people. I will sometimes avoid going to
events to avoid having to meet new people. The interesting part of this is that it only applies to
my personal life. When I am at work, I enjoy meeting new people. I meet new people every day
at work due to my job responsibilities. However, if my husband suggests that we attend a party
at his co-worker's house, I imagine every possible scenario for me to get out of having to go, and
if I do have to go, I am generally shy, and I stick with my husband the entire night.
I discovered this about myself through introspection. Introspection is when we reflect on
our thoughts, feelings, and motives for something (Aronson, Wilson, & Sommers, 2019). I used
introspection to discover why I would try and avoid going somewhere to meet new people and
why I became so nervous when I knew that I would be meeting new people. I realized that I was
worried about what those people would think of me once I met them.
