COVID-19 and the Global Challenges: Integration Essay
Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, Fort Hays State University
IDS 805: Global Challenges: 21st Century Promise and Peril
Abstract
This course required the reading of three very different, but extremely informative books.
Each of these three books offered different perspectives on what the future of the world holds. In
2052, Randers worked to predict the future over the next 40 years and motivate the population to
start taking action to improve the future for the coming generations. Factfulness by Rosling
worked to show the audience that the world today may not be as bleak as many perceive it to be.
There is a need to rely on all of the information available, not just bits and pieces given by the
media. Finally, Deadliest Enemy shared the scary future that awaits the world if there is not
learning and preparation for future health crisis like the one currently facing the world. Overall,
there were three different ideas, but they all worked to shape the ideas and knowledge of the
future.
Early in the semester I interacted with the seven Global Revolutions developed by the
CSIS. I identified information as the revolution I was most interested in, especially in light of the
global pandemic and how information has impacted the world. The information revolution
focuses on four main components: data growth, access/privacy, knowledge and useful resources.
Specifically in this paper, knowledge and useful resources will be the two most often referred to.
Knowledge focuses on how there will be more information in the world, but that does not mean
the population will be more knowledgeable, there has to be a way to identify what information
will help people gain knowledge. Useful resources focuses on how there will be numerous
, sources that provide different data and analysis, and individuals must be able to take the data
presented and interpret said data while also determining the credibility. This paper will look at all
three books in terms of our current global pandemic and the information revolution.
2052
The first book covered in this course was 2052 by Jorgen Randers. In this text Randers
predicts what he believes the world will look like by the year 2052. This text was written in
2012, and one interesting aspect was that some predictions were made about what 2020 or this
decade would hold. Overall, Randers made wonderful predictions in his book, but there is hope
that with more knowledge and awareness the world could make necessary changes in an effort to
create a more promising future for generations to come.
COVID-19
In the book’s introduction, Randers says, “The first step down the road to mental peace is
to obtain a precise description of what the future is likely to look like. Then to accept it. And
finally to stop grieving,” (p. 4). While this quote stuck out because of the context of the book. It
relates perfectly to the current world circumstances. Since the pandemic began in early 2020,
many have voiced their opinion of simply wanting to go back to “normal.” While this does sound
comforting, people must be realistic and look at the facts to determine the future that is quickly
approaching. As Randers noted, with the presence of an accurate description people can then
work to accept what is coming and stop grieving the preferred future that will never be.
In Randers book, he includes predictions from a number of people whom he trusts to give
insight to what they think the next 40 year will hold. One, written by Harald Siem, was
specifically about the future of healthcare. Before reading Siem’s prediction, the readers hear
Randers opinion that healthcare in the next 40 years will accomplish more than many think is
