Assessing Population Needs
In efforts to determine the needs of a community to plan an intervention, a
community needs assessment will be conducted. As per the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) community needs assessments are vital tools in which provide a snapshot
of the local policy, systems, and strategies of environmental changes (CDC, 2013).
Furthermore, implementations aid in identifying areas of improvement. The CDC
recommends that such assessments include a minimum of three components. The three
components include policy change, system change, and environmental change (2013). The
latter three components refer to both the physical, social, and economic changes
recommended for assessment.
Assessing population needs has many approaches, including techniques that assess
the needs, assets, and the capacities that affect the health of the community. To assess the
needs of the community it is important to identify components such as the size of the
community, access and availability, determining a cost-effective timeline, and the action in
which the timeline will
be completed (Hall, 2016). Likewise, it is crucial to determine how the collected information
will identify barriers and improve the needs within the community.
