According to the United Nations, human trafficking is the:
“the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of the

payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another
person, for the purpose of exploitation”(What is Human Trafficking?, n.d.) .
Sexual exploitation is one of the most common forms of human trafficking, with an
estimated 4.8 million people trafficked for forced sexual exploitation in the United States. 71%
of sex trafficking victims are women and girls (Human Trafficking Statistics & Facts, 2020).
Sex trafficking exposes victims to complex trauma- a form of traumatic stress that occurs
repeatedly or chronically and often involves some form of coercive control and poses a
significant risk to the mental health of adolescent victims (Complex Trauma, 2018). Depression,
anxiety and panic disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are all psychological
conditions found in survivors of human trafficking. Victims may also exhibit comorbid issues
such as alcohol and substance use, dissociation, self-injurious behavior, guilt and shame,
memory problems, anger and aggression, and somatic complaints (Miller-Perrin & Wurtele,
2016).
In order to recover from such a traumatic experience, victims of human trafficking
require mental health treatment that promotes the health and well-being of the individual. Goals
