Establishing the Group Structure
Group structure refers to the rules that define group norms, roles, and expectations which
influence group behavior and can impact effective communication of group members (Hogg,
2004). As discussed in previous group process reflections, the task group I am assigned to has
developed clear norms, roles, and expectations. The group is cohesive and communicates well.
As the group continues to meet, the group member roles have become more distinct and well-
defined.
I think that at this point, we each know what to expect from each other. For example, the
unofficial group leader, C, has continued to keep us on track timewise but is also now ensuring
that conversations during the meetings stay focused on the project and that concerns get
addressed. The group member that has always listened more than she spoke, E, is now silent
unless directly asked a question. I believe her lack of input comes more from her insecurity than
from disinterest in the group though, and I feel like I need to make more effort to ask her
opinions. Then there is the member, J., who is the most stressed about the project. She has
always wanted to be certain that she understood her assignment and that everyone else
understood there’s. She is anxious about her grade being determined by the rest of the group and
seeks to remedy that by attempting to collaborate on all aspects of the project. Sometimes her
anxiety comes across as wanting to control the group and it has caused some confusion during
meetings. The final group member besides myself, S., is more confident in sharing her expertise
and more vocal about ensuring the group is respectful of and understands the concerns of one
another.
