Redefining Identity Through Assimilation

Assimilation is a process in which immigrants and nonimmigrants undergo in order

to adopt a new culture, language, and different practices of a new social group that serves

as the dominant social group within that nation. It is also a way in which these individuals

are “forcefully” socially emersed within the new culture that they might often times lose

their own culture to fit in. Many immigrants undergo this assimilation process unwillingly

but many of these individuals do it in order to avoid rejection from the citizens of that

country. Assimilation for many can be good or bad but each serve their own purpose.

Assimilation in the United States is seen heavily and has many advantages and

disadvantages from both an immigrant’s perspective as well as a nonimmigrant. As an

immigrant many of their culture is not heavily seen with in the US as each individual has

been forced into assimilation. One of the disadvantages of assimilation is that the

discrimination serves as an inequality for those immigrants as they are forced to change who

they are to fit the new popular culture. This distinction between being and doing reflects a

bias toward assimilation. Courts will protect traits like skin color of chromosomes because

such traits cannot be changed. In contrast, the courts will not protect mutable traits, because

individuals can alter them to fade into the mainstream (Yoshino, 2016).

Thus, the case of Renee Rogers, the African American employee at American

airlines fought for race discrimination and lost her case because the airline company did not

want her to wear conrows to work. She argued that the hairstyle was distinctly associated
