Case Study and Social Issues

Claudia is 6 years old who is a U.S. citizen, but her parents are immigrates from

Nicaragua (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014b). Claudia’s family struggles economically

and also struggling to obtain legal residency (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014b). Claudia

witnessed a mugging in her neighborhood and began to be very anxious and needy (Plummer,

Makris, & Brocksen, 2014b).

One of the social issues that Claudia and her family have is immigration status. Claudia’s

parents have not been able to obtain legal residency (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014b). Her

father inconsistently finds work in manual labor and her mother only works 3 nights a week at a

nail salon (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014b). Another social issue is, Claudia’s

environment. Claudia and her parents live in an impoverished urban neighborhood with a rising

crime rate (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014b).

is culturally, psychologically, socially, or physically blocked (Fong, 2009). Social workers help

the client find ways to overcome these barriers and become fully functioning again (Fong, 2009).

Another culturally competent strategy is strengths perspective. Strength perspective is a

way of approaching the client and purposefully collecting information about the client’s positive

attributes and behaviors (Fong, 2009). The strength perspective is particularly important for the

culturally competent social worker because ethnic client’s worldview may be so different from
