PIECE A
The canvas of the evening sky is splattered with colours in nature’s
greatest painting. Deep amethyst diffuses into navy blue; oranges and
pinks and reds all blend into darkness under the watchful eye of a
glistening moon. She watches over the waves, the hills, the towns. She
caresses the land with her ivory gaze, sparking fire in the hearts of
young lovers and fleeting memories in those who have loved many a time
before. In the fading sky, she is joined by dazzling diamonds and not a
single wisp of cloud blocks their view. Those diamonds seem
to surround me; their muted cries begging me to stop, to reconsider, to go
home. But I don’t listen. I drown out their kind voices with
poisonous thoughts and lock each caring sentiment away in the vast
dungeons of my mind, hoping they’ll disappear forever. And that’s exactly
what I hoped for me.
Silently, pockets of grass sway to the gentle melody of a cool breeze.
Their inquisitive fingers reach out into the air, only to be swept back down
by a sudden change in the music. I watch the moonlight crest the waves
in a lining of glinting silver until they crash into the jagged rock – not yet
worn by the transient waves – which guard the beaches. Twisting and
turning in the sky, birds chatter among themselves as they skid along the
waves like surfers, rising and falling to the beat of the sea. Further along
the sloping cliff-face, I see a tartan blanket housing two lovers. And the
world is drowned out.
Last July. Motionless, I sit like an empty shell of a being. Blank eyes.
Expressionless. Memories assault my mind and I can pose no fight as they
threaten to overpower me. The warm sand, gold as her flowing locks;
the perpetual waves, gleaming sapphire like those loving
eyes; the comforting sunlight as radiant as her unwavering smile. I feel
her soft hands cupping my face just like that very night -
