2.1 Introduction
EGI Manufacturing is experiencing many problems with their employees that may lead
to work dysfunctions and psychopathology. These problems are:
• Stress, depression and anxiety
• Health issues relating to smoking, being overweight and unfit.
• Tension of layoffs/retrenchment under employees
• Employees who are exposed to car-jackings and robberies on a weekly basis.
2.2. Discussion
There are various factors that can cause work dysfunctions and psychopathology, but
first it is important to identify what a work dysfunction or psychopathology is.
Psychopathology looks at specific psychological and behavioural disorders. The
disorders affect a person in various manners, namely personally, socially and their
direct environments. It is a study field that includes and study the characteristics,
causes and treatment of psychological disorders (Research Report in Employee and
Organisational Wellness, 2020).
Work dysfunction can be defined as a behaviour problem that negatively affects the
employee, their performance and sometimes the employer as well. Both the
circumstances and characteristics of the employee and the work environment must be
considered to identify a work dysfunction (Lowman, 1996, p. 3)
According to Campbell and Cellini (1981) when an employee is having difficulty
reaching an acceptable level of performance according to their personal or
organisational standards, it creates poor work performance and the employee is more
likely to be absence, dishonest, have interpersonal conflict, low work quality etc. These
performance problems can manifest in the employee and lead to work dysfunctions
and psychopathology.
By combining these two topics, occupational maladjustment is created. Here we look
at the relationship between work behaviour and psychopathology, including work
