For all tasks you must provide supporting evidence (quotes and references).

, Learning Outcomes to be assessed:

2. Know how to identify and control hazards in the workplace.
3. Be able to carry out a risk assessment, identifying control measures.

Note: Write all answers underneath the relevant ‘Task box. All information should be contained
within this report.

A.C. (P3) Describe the methods used to identify hazards in a working environment.

Task 1

According to the HSE publication “Risk Assessment, A brief guide to controlling risks in the workplace”
quote and describe the methods used to identify hazards in a working environment.

You will need to:

 Quote all methods that the publication suggests can be used to identify hazards.

 Give relevant contextualised examples of where each of the methods of hazard identification can be
used and the likely hazards that could be identified using this method.

See the address below for: Risk Assessment, A brief guide to controlling risks in the workplace”

www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg163.pdf

Note: You should answer all questions in the context of an engineering environment.
(P3)
“Check manufacturers’ instructions or data sheets for chemicals and equipment as they can be very
helpful in explaining the hazards and putting them in their true perspective.”
This is important because sometimes if the instructions involve any tasks that have hazards associated with
them. For example if the instructions state to remove some guards that were in place during transit that you
may have missed, this could potentially have caused a safety issue if you hadn’t read the instructions.

All potentially hazardous substances should come with a MSDS (materials safety data sheet) to tell the user
the potential hazards and precautions to take. These will also tell the possible side effects of exposure to the
substances like getting it in your eyes mouth or on your skin.

“Look back at your accident and ill-health records – these often help to identify the less obvious
hazards.”
There could be patterns that link to hazards that need more control measures in place. For example if there
have been a lot of slips and trips in a certain area of the factory, there may be some loose cables in that
particular area.

“Take account of non-routine operations (eg maintenance, cleaning operations or changes in
production cycles).”
