Introduction
, I will be discussing 2 case studies regarding psychological
perspectives, in case study one I will be discussing Andy
who is a thirty-two-year-old male who has recently been in
a road traffic accident in which his partner died. As a result
of this Andy has been diagnosed with having post-
traumatic stress disorder and depression.
I will also be discussing Kiera, who is a fifty-four-year-old
woman who has become addicted to painkillers following
surgery three years ago. Due to Kiera finding the surgery
traumatic as it followed a diagnosis of cancer which altered
her appearance.
M1-Psychological perspectives
Psychological perspectives can be used to understand
human development and behaviour. The five psychological
perspectives include biological, psychodynamic,
behavioural, humanistic and cognitive.
Biological perspective means that someone's behaviour
may be linked to biological factors such as chromosomes
and hormones, which means that behaviour may be
inherited. The biological approach is commonly used in
drug therapy because behaviour can be manipulated by
altering hormones. Drug therapy can be used to support
Andy to control and calm his PTSD episodes, medications
such as benzodiazepines can be used to create a calm and
relaxing feeling that is given to patients suffering from
severe anxiety.
The biological perspective can also be linked to the nature
vs nurture theory, nature means "physical characteristics
which are biologically determined by genetic inheritance. "
And nurture means “the influences that an environment
has on an individual including social and environmental
