Upon reading the instructions for the Museum/National Park assignment, my mind
automatically traveled to the age of the Civil War. Being an avid lover of history, I couldn’t
help but to go back in time and explore a pivotal era that shaped the course of history. Although
I have not had the opportunity to visit face to face because of the restrictions that were/still is in
place, my virtual experience was more than enough to whet my appetite to go. The place that I
am referencing is the American Civil War Museum at Appomattox. The statement “seeing is
believing” is what comes to mind as I ventured through the virtual experience. I’ve studied
history but being able to put a “name (time frame) to a face (picture)” made things just a
little clearer for me. Let’s take a moment to explore the artifacts found within the museum.
Placement is key when examining the location of the American Civil War Museum. At
a first glance, I thought that Virginia was a pretty strange place to house a historic museum of
this caliber. It could simply be because I live in North Carolina and Virginia, for me, is only a
three- and-a-half-hour drive or so. For this museum to be this close to my hometown is pretty
cool. It wasn’t until I dug a little deeper into the Civil War that I discovered that Virginia, in
particular Appomattox, had a distinct touch in the climax of the Civil War. Appomattox is a
small town that is located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is only right to house the
museum in a place
where this war comes to an end. The Civil War goes down in history as one of the most noted
wars that has ever been fought on American Territory. From April 1861 to its climax 4 years
later in April of 1865, the Civil War was a period of time where Northern and Southern States
