Introduction
This case study expounds on the case of Nathan, who is an active student in grade four.
Nathan is enjoying school and participates well in the class, as he is enthusiastic about his
studies. Nathan performs exemplary in social studies and science because the teacher reads out
the material loud (Paulsen, n.d.). Also, he enjoys these lessons because educator uses hand-
activities when teaching. However, Ms. Chekov, his teacher, has reported that he has challenges
in decoding unfamiliar words and cannot read some sight words. Although Nathan portrays a
positive reading attitude, this attitude has been deteriorated due to his wanting reading skills.
Fortunately, Ms. Chekov and his parents are willing to deploy extreme measures to help Nathan
improve his reading ability (Paulsen, n.d.). This study will outline goals and strategies that can be
deployed to help Nathan advance his academics.
Goals
The case study stated that it is October, meaning Nathan has half a semester to improve
before testing. Nathan experienced challenges in reading, and that dictates that he should
improve his decoding skills and require proper outlined instructions. However, it is important to
start by defining his strengths in order to identify what needs to be an improvement. Nathan
displays the ability to adequately decode one-syllable words well (Paulsen, n.d.). Currently,
Nathan can decode words at a lower level than a grade four student; hence he needs to improve
and be able to decode fourth-grade words before his school year collapses. Also, Nathan needs to
improve on his sight word vocabulary. Nathan can currently read an average of 55 words per
