Hi Lily,
Thank you so much for submitting your response to this week’s discussion with your
topic of CAFTA. I really enjoyed reading it and wanted to share a few of my thoughts on it. I
agree with many of the South American Caribbean nations having voiced their opposition with
the deal since its inception. I want to take it a step further and suggest an obstacle with CAFTA
since its inception is that the US already had in place many trade agreements with the Central
American nations that already allowed free flow of trade (CRS, 2009). I would agree with you
that there is a lot of data suggesting the Central American nations didn’t grow as much as
anticipated. Many of the countries still have rampet poverty and violence that the deal was
supposed to succeed in (Cepal, 2004). There was also US opposition that came from Union
workers who were worried about their jobs being outsourced to the Central American nations
(Beehner, 2005). These examples are representative of your statement that an FTA like CAFTA
can have massive macro and micro impact on the countries. A verse that goes along with this is
Proverbs 14:31,” Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his maker...”. I believe this relates to
CAFTA because of unfulfilled promises of helping the poor and disadvantaged in the Central
American countries. This is not how Christians are supposed to treat the poor or how Christ
would treat them.
