Language Arts Strand Project: Compare and Contrast

EDUC 632

Liberty University

Abstract

The language arts strand is focused on comparing and contrasting various pieces of fiction

literature. The grade level for the language arts strand is focused on is the 5th grade. Included in

the strand are various objectives that tie into each other. The first objective is that students will

identify an author’s use of figurative language. The second objective is that students will identify,

compare, and contrast relationships while reading a fictional or historical fiction text. While

achieving the first objective, students will use their background knowledge of figurative language

to better understand what is expected of them while they are reading.

Students will also be using reading strategies throughout the reading process to monitor

comprehension. Since the students will be reading different texts, they will also participate in and

contribute to discussions across content areas. Students will be able to use their comprehension

skills to compare and contrast different texts with their peers. Each book that is used is at a 5th

grade level. The actual lesson is used to review comparing and contrasting within groups after

giving a summary. Reading groups will be arranged based on a student’s reading level or if a

student is an English Learner. Before discussing their texts with others, students will be able to

create a summary of what they have read to share with others. Each text will be translated (if

needed) as well. There will be two formative assessments that will be used by the teacher to

know if the students have an understanding of the main objective of the lesson. The summative

assessment will be used to measure if the students did in fact meet the planned objectives and

standards of learning and comprehending how to compare and contrast
