Paris Basics:
Paris is related to Prince Escalus and therefore has a very high
status in Verona.
If he marries Juliet, the standing of the Capulet family will rise,
giving them more social prestige than the Montague’s.
He is a foil to Romeo.
“The gallant, young, and noble gentleman” (Act 3 Scene 5)
Triple use of adjectives.
“Gallant” - brave, spirited, noble-minded, or chivalrous.
“A man of wax” (Act 1 Scene 3)
A perfectly sculpted man, The Nurse approves of Paris as a suitor and
this foreshadows her change and betrayal of Juliet wanting her to marry
Paris instead of Romeo.
Perhaps ‘wax’, which melts when warm, implies his love is superficial.
The additional connotation here is that he has no substance, no real
character perhaps acting as a forewarning that he is not someone Juliet
will love.
Act 4 Scene 1
“Thy face is mine, and thou hast slandered it” (Act 1 Scene 4)
Paris aligns himself with the stereotypical man of the time.
He serves to heighten the romance and devotion of Romeo and
Juliet as Romeo refuses/does not refer to her as a possession,
unlike Paris.
The characters of Romeo and Paris seem to metaphorically
represent the conflict between passionate love and the patriarchal
ideal of love/marriage.
Why does he die?
Seems to be a meaningless death.
Perhaps the main reason for this is that his love is empty,
superficial and heartless There could be an idea that he was
bargaining for love rather than truly being in love by using his
social position as a means of winning the Capulet’s over.
