P1- Explain how work experience can support the development of own professional skills
and personal attributes for work in the health and social care sector.
There are several skills and attributes needed to work in health a social care, for example:
Skills:
-problem solving
-numeracy
-Team work
-responsibility
work experience gives hands on education with service users; enabling skills/attributes to be
developed which, can then be put into practice with service users.
Personally, my skills and attributes are:
1. Patience- it’s important to have time for people
2. Honesty- to ensure service users know where they stand
3. Interpersonal skills- so that service users can interpret body language correctly
4. Punctuality- to emphasise service providers are reliable
5. Respect- to show that service providers are approachable and kind
However, I do have my weakness’s. personally, I struggle with numeracy and employability.
Since a young age I have struggled with maths and I have only had one job and a few work
experience placements. Furthermore, finding a job within the health and social care sector
may be difficult. However, I have been unable to find work experience placements due to
the pandemic- COVID 19.
Moreover, a key attribute is developing professionalism. Professionalism is the ability to
remain professional and to comply with the standards set by the workplace and regulating
bodies. Furthermore, this includes dressing appropriately, time management, treating
others with respect and the ability to listen carefully. Furthermore, this helps to develop
skills and attributes.
In addition, communication and interpersonal skills including non-verbal communication
and active listening are vitally important whilst working within the health and social care
sector as they help to build secure attachments with service users which, enables their
needs to be met. In addition, sharing information within the MDT to promote holistic care.

whilst meeting the needs of the service user.
On the other hand, organisational skills. Firstly, good time management skills are vitally
important as they allow you to finish tasks and ensures your reliable. Secondly, prioritising
tasks must be done to deal with a task effectively. A simple way of doing this is via a traffic
light system. Furthermore, this highlights your punctuality and organisational skills.
Therefore, skills and attributes will be developed and maintained.
Moreover, technical skills. Firstly, data handling- data means any item of information no
matter what form it is presented in. For data to be used and interpreted it has to be
gathered and recorded in a systematic manner- known as data handling. By ensuring data
has been handled correctly other service providers can access it. Each health and social care
setting has its own policies and procedures for data handing. However, they follow GDPR to
ensure the safety and security of their service users information.
Secondly, specialist equipment may be required by service users to meet their needs, for
example:
-hoist
-lift
-wheel chair
In addition, manual handing policy and procedures must be followed to ensure the safety of
their service users. By ensuring you are familiar with your technical skills and
policies/procedures you will be able to develop and maintain new skills.
On the other hand, teamwork skills are vitally important whilst working within a health and
social care setting. Furthermore, this ensures service providers and users get the support
they need. Good team working skills are vital whilst working within an MDT to ensure the
service users holistic needs are met. Furthermore, by ensuring you work as a team to meet
the holistic needs of service users you will develop a new skill.
Moreover, confidence and personal responsibility. Having confidence is how you feel about
carrying out a task or a certain role. Confidence is important in work experience as it
emphasises communication skills which, are essential in career advancement. On the other
hand, its important to know that everyone is responsible for their own actions and we have
a personal responsibility to complete work experience to the best of our ability. Therefore,
by ensuring a clear understanding of personal responsibility and having confidence will
enable skills and attributes to be developed.
Lastly, the ability to link theory with practice is a good way of putting what we have learnt in
the classroom into practice. For example, Bowlby’s theory of attachment emphasises that
children and adults develop attachments from birth due to monotropy and they can develop
secure attachment by having their needs met. However, if their needs aren’t met, they
could develop attachment issues from insecure to avoidant. Linking theory with practice is a
great way of developing new skills and attributes as it helps you to use what you’ve learnt.

prepare for employment in the health and social care sector.

There are several expectations for employment within the health and social care sector. We
can be taught those expectations in the classroom. However, work experience helps us to
put expectations into practice with the help of training and supervision from the
management team. Therefore, enabling us to develop further skills and attributes that will
aid personal career choices and help prepare for employment.
Furthermore, solidifying those skills is vitally important whilst working within the health and
social care sector to meet service users’ needs. Personally, during my work experience at a
disability school I leant that its vitally important to follow legislation such as the equality act
2010 to protect individuals from discrimination. Furthermore, by ensuring the equality act is
followed service users’ needs will be met.
Its important to plan work experience to help get a greater understanding of the service and
their expectations. In addition planning work experience is good practice and can help you
to transition in your work placement.
Respecting diversity and equality are important skills to have whilst working within the
health and social care sector as it emphasises acceptance and kindness. Furthermore, these
attributes can be developed through work experience placements. To respect diversity is to
value the difference between people, for example:
-culture
-age
-gender
-disability
It is a legal requirement for all health and social care providers to respect and value all
individuals despite their differences. Moreover, Equality means for everyone to have equal
access to the services they require no matter where they live or their needs. The equality act
2010 ensures that everyone is treated equally and has the same opportunities to access
health and social care services. Furthermore, this is something that is learnt in the early
stages of level 3 health and social care and helps gain a further understanding of the
expectations whilst on work experience placements
On the other hand, respecting confidentiality and dignity are both extremely important in
working within the health and social care sector. Service providers have a duty of
confidentiality in accordance with GDPR 2018 and company’s own policies and procedures
when dealing with personal data. Keeping data confidential means not sharing information
without service users consent unless, it’s with a purpose of safeguarding. Likewise, dignity
which means every individual is worthy of respect and pride in one’s self must be protected.
For example, if a service user has urinated on themselves take them away and deal with the
situation without drawing unnecessary attention to the situation. Furthermore, these
attributes can be developed through work experience. Therefore, a greater understanding
of the expectations whilst on work experience placements will be understood.
In addition, understanding health, safety and security is important as on work experience
you have a legal responsibility to be aware of your own and others safety. Furthermore,
safeguarding policies and procedures need to be followed to ensure health, safety and
