1.1. The skeletal system
The skeletal system is the bodies central
framework and it acts as a support structure
for the body. The bones, cartilage,
ligaments, tendons and connective tissue
make up the skeletal system and help to
shape the body, thus helping to create
movement. The skeletal system also makes
blood cells, provides protection for organs
and stores minerals. Another common
name for the skeletal system is the
musculoskeletal system.
The skeleton consists of two sections: the
axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton includes the bones
which form the longitudinal axis of the body such as the skull, vertebral column, and
thoracic cage. The appendicular skeleton includes the bones of the limbs and girdles.
These bones attach the limbs to the axial skeleton.
Functions of the bones
Our bones perform five functions which are: support, Protection, allow movement,
storage, and blood cell formation. Bones provide support as they form the internal
framework of the body and the leg bones provide support by acting as pillars to support
the upper body. The thoracic wall is supported by the ribcage. As mentioned above, the
skeletal system allows for movements due to the different tissues attached to the bones
which then act as levers to move different parts of the body. Bones are storage
locations for minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. A large amount of calcium is
found in the bone and a small amount is found in the blood stream to help transmit
messages. Marrow cavities serve as the location for blood cell formation known as
