An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced

 Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
 You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
 This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
 Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
 You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
 Write 300 - 500 words.


An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced Unit

At first sight, the material and content of the book ‘Cutting-Edge Advance Student’ look very clearly
organised and presented with vibrant and colorful articles, visuals, charts and appealing images.
A range of exercises and activities are spread evenly, focusing on fluency and accuracy.. Activities such as
freer versus controlled activities create opportunities to work in groups, in pairs and as individuals. The
grammar and vocabulary throughout the unit are presented in an engaging and practical manner.
The textbook includes the warmer, the main body and the plenary stages.

First of all, it begins with warmer activities for students to brainstorm and predict what the topic will be about.
Next, the main body of the unit covers the topic in depth, which students can comprehend by using the skills
of skimming, scanning, and intensive reading.
They will ultimately conduct the relevant assessments independently.
Furthermore, the book also contains sections for language summary, grammar and vocabulary practices for
each unit. This will allow the student to easily identify and use the materials for review or self-study.

As we advance in the course book it becomes increasingly difficult. Beginning with more basic verbal and
grammatical forms, and concluding with the writing of a report. Therefore, sharing their own personal
thoughts and ideas in a structured assignment through informal activities and reports that students can work
on independently. The setup of the unit is very logical and tailored to advanced students.
The text uses functional language, with equal attention paid to the four skills such as activities ranging from
listening and reading to writing reports. These should offer a good challenge for advanced students, but
there are very little pronunciation activities and no final test is provided. This would be a great addition to the
coursebook.

Although the unit is well laid out, it appears to be crowded as there are too many things happening on one
page, making it hard and unappealing to read.
The subjects seem to be appropriate as they are centred around globalization and should not be offensive to
any culture or religion, since globalization affects us all.
I am not sure whether additional course materials or the teacher's book are provided. Nor is it clear whether
the school, the students or the parents of the students will be able to afford this book.

Overall, I would certainly use this course book in my curriculum, as it is an excellent addition for teaching an
advanced class. It includes well-designed activities that encourage students to speak, share ideas and
thoughts while using the target language to communicate with others. Most of the evaluation checklist is also
covered.
