Professional Presence and Influence

Introduction
In this paper several new concepts and ideas for me will be discussed. Models of health
and healing will describe how health care has developed over the years and what influenced the
change. I will present and discuss my Jung personality results and how they affect the way I
practice as a nurse. The wholeness of the human being and how the four bodies/aspects of the
whole interact to keep the whole being healthy. Then finally, how with keeping the four
bodies/aspects in mind, an optimal healing environment can be created. All of these concepts will
help me incorporate a mindfulness and being in the present into my practice as a nurse now and
as an educator in the future.
Models of Health and Healing
Healthcare today reflects the social and technological advancements that are currently
happening in the world at that time. In today’s world we have social media and the internet that
people use to get answers about almost anything they are curious about. This is true about
healthcare. People will search the internet or go to social media when they don’t feel well or
have a health concern. These answers may not always be correct, but society today will use
whatever means possible to gain an answer.
With this idea in mind, it helps to explain how Larry Dossey’s Three Eras of health and
healing came about:
Era I – 1860’s focused on the physical body
Era II – 1950’s combined the body and the mind
, Era III – 1990’s combined the body, mind and spirit
The one thing they all have in common is whatever was going on in science and technological
advances at that time, played a part in how health and healing was perceived and practiced.
Era I, in the 1860’s, was when science was incorporated into medical practice. The
assumption at the time was that health and healing were completely physical in nature. The focus
was on treating with antibiotics, surgery and medicine. Patients looked towards allopathic
physicians for healing (Tassone, S. 2015). The advancements at the time were things like Joseph
Lister developing sterile techniques and Florence Nightingale reforming nursing and medicine
by establishing a theoretical framework that led to the creation of The Nightingale School of
Nursing at St. Thomas Hospital in 1860. Era I was all about the physical body and a person’s
consciousness is considered a byproduct of the chemical, anatomic and physiologic aspects of
the brain and is not considered a major factor in the origins of health and disease (Dossey, B.M,
2008).
Era II came about in the 1950’s. This model incorporated both mind and body, and with
it, therapies emerged. These therapies reflected the growing awareness that the actions of a
person’s mind or consciousness – thoughts, emotions, beliefs, meaning and attitudes – exerted
important effects on the behavior of the person’s physical body (Tassone, S.2015). The human
being was treated as whole system. The patient has more influence on their own healing. The
weakness in this model is in the patient’s ability to recognize this control and the physician’s
ability to relinquish it (Tassone, S.2015).
Era II came on the heels of two great wars which help lead to mind-body medicine as
soldiers came home in “shell shock” thus therapies were added. These therapies included
counseling, psychoneuroimmunology, hypnosis and imagery. The global community was also
healing as NATO and the United Nations were created to make the world a more secure time to
