Task 1: Professional Accountability
The nursing profession is full of extraordinary people who made an impact through
the centuries. Nursing theorists led the way in shaping the nursing profession as we know it
today. One of the theorists that influenced my career in nursing is Dorothea Orem. Her
theory is based on the idea of self-care capability and performance. This theory states that
through proper nursing interventions, the patient’s self-care function will be restored to the
level before the illness or will be maximized to the point of well-being. Nurses in all
specialties are implementing Dorothea Orem's theory. People are the most vulnerable when
they are sick. Every patient wants to get better, go home to their family, and be
independent. Health is not only physical but includes the emotional side of the person.
Emotional health will enable the patient to be whole again. The respect and dignity that
nurses give to the patient help in the recovery process by allowing the patient to keep a
positive attitude, which in turn reflects in physical form.
I use Orem's theory in my nursing profession daily. At the long-term acute care
(LTAC) hospital where I work, most of the patients are there for weeks. Many of these
patients are on a ventilator, unable to speak due to tracheostomy, and artificially fed via
feeding pumps. These patients are completely dependent on the nurse to provide care. I use
Orem's theory by showing respect and dignity every time I am at the bedside. I believe
respect and dignity are the way to treat a person. I always say hello and ask my patients how
they are doing, even though I know they cannot respond to me. I am convinced that treating
patients as normally as possible will help their emotional and physical healing.
, Historical figures from the 19th and 20th centuries worth mentioning are Mary Jane
Seacole and Florence Nightingale. Mary Jane Seacole is a nurse that is not very well known,
but deserves to be talked about. She was a young woman trying to make a difference in the
world despite discrimination and prejudice. The bias was solely on her being a black woman
in the medical field. She was one of the first nurses to use unconventional medicine,
unproven methods, and home remedies to care for the sick. The nursing she practiced gave
her fame and credit long after her death, but scrutiny while caring for the sick at the bedside.
Florence Nightingale was a pioneer in the nursing profession. She was the first woman to be
recognized and rewarded for her work. The "Lady with the Lamp," as we know her,
believed that "nursing is an art- an art requiring an organized, practical, and scientific
training. Nursing is putting us in the best possible conditions for nature to preserve health-
to prevent, restore, or cure disease or injury. Nursing is, therefore, to help the patient live"
(Contemporary Nursing, 2008). The most significant difference between those two amazing
women was their philosophy on healing and recovery. Nightingale focused on a clean and
organized environment, while Seacole concentrated on knowledge that was not scientifically
proven, but rather created by nature. Seacole used herbal remedies in her practice.

I keep a calm, organized, and clean environment in my nursing practice due to the
influence of Florence Nightingale. According to her theory, being calm, organized, and
clean are the best strategies for healing. I believe that kind of environment brings positive
energy and starts the recovery process. On the other hand, Mary Jane Seacole's theory uses
unscientific methods to heal the sick. When modern medicine cannot help, unconventional
medicine could bring positive outcomes through deep breathing exercises, meditation, or
listening to music.
