A. Nursing Theory With Influence On My Values and Goals
A nursing theory that has made an impact on my values and goals in the nursing
profession is the self-care deficit model. Dorthea Orem developed this theory in 1971. The idea
of the theory is that nursing intervention is aimed at assisting the patient to regain their ability or
to regain the maximum potential ability of the patient to maintain self-care and independence.
(CHERRY, 2013) This has been an influence on me in the nursing field because I am a giver. I
have had to learn that giving care is one aspect of my job, but empowering others to do it is just
as important.

This theory is implemented in many ways in the nursing profession. Education is one of
the major ways nurses incorporate the theory into theirs. By educating patients on the needs and
reasoning for intervention and what benefit they have for the patient we are encouraging and
giving interventions meaning to the patient. An example of this might be for someone with a hip
replacement. Getting up for the first time may be extremely painful, but if the patient
understands that this is how they will be able to walk again and that it is going to be progressive
they will likely participate and work through a reasonable amount of discomfort. Another way
the theory is implemented in practice is by assisting and not completely doing a task for a
patient. Patients may need help in the shower due to mobility. However, this does not mean that
, they are completely unable to wash. Nurses encourage patients to wash the parts of their bodies
that they can and to attempt to and try to wash the other areas. After the patient has made an
effort and done what they can then the nurse steps in.

In my practice, this theory comes into play most often with my post-op patients. In the
women's and children's units where I work there are cesarean sections that take place regularly.
After these operations, it is often painful for patients to move and be mobile. I educate my
patients before and after the surgery about the importance of doing these things as soon as
possible after they are recovered. In my experience, the longer a pt waits to try and get up or to
reposition themselves the worse the pain is. I also use this theory with my pediatric patients.
Diabetic children, for example, often have no interest in planning meals or monitoring their
sugars. By educating and empowering some of the youth, I have seen some better compliance.
Assisting them with meal and snack plans by starting with what they prefer is helpful and allows
the patient to have a sense of control.
B. Contributions to Nursing
Two figures that have contributed to nursing are Clara Barton and Florence Nightingale.
Both of these women have made contributions to the profession that can not even begin to be
measured. Clara Barton served soldiers in the civil war and went above and beyond to obtain
supplies(CHERRY, 2013). She is also the founder of the American Red Cross. (CHERRY,
2013) Florence Nightingale is highly recognized in the nursing profession and has been credited
with so many contributions. Of her many contributions, establishing the first nursing school in
England and developed the first pie chart. (CHERRY, 2013)
