Introduction
Leadership is the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to
contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organization. (House et al,
1999: p.184). In my mind a leader is someone who leads an organization or team. This person
does not have to be named a leader by title. The best leaders are ones that do it without the title.
In todays world, leaders have to be very agile and flexible. They need
, to be able to lead teams and people that they don’t see and interact with daily. People work in
different states and countries and can report to the same leader. I believe that the role of a
leader has changed significantly in the past 2 decades.
For me to become a better leader, I chose to go back to school and start my education at
Western Governors University. One the first tasks in the MBA program is for me to explore
how I can become a great leader. In the next few pages, you will read my 5 top strengths as
identified by CliftonStrengths. Then I will evaluate my leadership based on the Transactional
theory. Lastly, I will discuss two goals, using the SMART concept.

Discovering what my strengths and behaviors are will assist me in developing strategies
which will help me become successful in my career and family life.
The CliftonStrengths assessment measures a total of 34 themes. Based on the results of
my assessment, my five most dominant themes are: Relator, Responsibility, Harmony,
Consistency, and Achiever. In the next section, I will do a deeper dive and discuss what each
of those mean and how they relate to me.
Reflection on Clifton Strengths
My first and most prominent strength according to the CliftonStrengths is Relator. The
description for Relator that was provided by CliftonStrengths for this theme is: “People
exceptionally talented in the Relator theme enjoy close relationships with
others. They find deep satisfaction in working hard with friends to achieve a goal.” In my
current position I attend events a lot. Sometimes I will stand at a booth for 6-8 hours greeting
people and speaking with them regarding the products I sell. I find it very easy to relate to
