ANE Interview Core Questions
1) What are the qualities most needed to be a successful academic nurse educator?
a. Team player, aware that not everyone learns at the same pace, ability to
identify and address students that may be falling behind, approachable,
problem-solver, humility, and the ability to admit that you may be wrong and
don't know everything, motivating, passionate about students and their
learning.
2) Describe challenges to the Academic Nurse Educator (ANE) role as a result of
dynamic cultural, political, and economic forces in healthcare and society in
general?
a. I think the same thing applies to bedside nursing. If we could just come to
work and take care of our patients without charting, meetings, committees,
policies, etc., life would be a lot easier. In the academic setting, this the same.
If I could just come to work and not have to worry about policies, meetings,
rules, committees, and all the other things that take up our time, life would be
good. But all of these things are in place for a reason and help us keep our
patients and our students safe. All these things are in place to make things
better and ensure that we are doing what is expected of us.
3) As a novice, what was the best advice you were given if any? What advice would
you give to a novice academic nurse educator?
a. Academia is a whole different world. Teaching nursing is not based on your
experiences but what the book says and that can be very hard to wrap your
head around. I would tell a novice nurse educator to be willing to roll with the
punches, change can be a good thing, and you are not there to be the student’s
, best friend. It is awesome when you create lasting relationships with your
students, but their learning and education come first, and sometimes that
relationship can become blurred if you are not putting their learning first.
4) Have you encountered situations where academic integrity and/or social justice
have been questioned?
a. Absolutely. With local, state, national, and company policies in place, it can
be very hard to address those situations because you must follow policy, not
what you necessarily want to do. I had a student that cheated on an
assignment to a degree that I wanted them to be expelled from the school, but
the handbook forced us to follow certain processes and steps before we could
really put any "punishment" into place. It is always a difficult situation.
5) How has technology transformed nursing education and your role as an
educator?
a. From a lab standpoint, technology has allowed us to better simulate the real
bedside experience without the risk of harming or killing a real person. The
mannequins that we use are very life-like and allow the students to perform
procedures and practice skills in a safe environment. This technology also
helps the students feel better prepared for a real-life scenario.
ANE Interview Follow-Up Questions by Courtney Gormus, DNP, APRN, FNP-
C, RN
1) What is the student nurse population you teach?
a. She teaches the lecture material for the fundamentals of nursing. This
includes head to toe health assessments. She is also responsible for lab
, materials and simulation like wound care, IV placement, medication
administrations, foley placement, PICC line dressing changes, and many other
materials required for the completion of nursing school.
2) What degrees, licenses, and certifications do you currently hold? Are they
required for your current role as an academic nurse educator?
a. I currently hold DNP, APRN, FNP-C, RN. I just recently obtain DNP &
FNP- C a few months ago. Prior to that, I have MSN-Ed. To be an ANE at
Roseman University, all the faculty must have their MSN to be able to teach
the students in the class and/or lab.
3) What have you personally gained since you became an ANE?
a. Education has always been important and needs to be integrated into the
nursing profession. As a nurse and now a nurse practitioner, I want to pass on
the knowledge I have gained to my students so they can be at a better level
than I was when I started as a new nurse. It brings a lot of joy to see my
students succeed in the part of nursing they really want to do. A lot of them
write to me to keep you posted on what they are doing and they always say
thank you for what I have thought them. That is the main reason why I
became an ANE.
4) What changes have you implemented in your class that is a positive change for
your students?
a. I changed the way I test my students. My final examination is structured to
mirror to how questions are like on the NCLEX exam. I wanted my students
to be very comfortable with NCLEX type of questions, so when it comes to
