EHM1 TASK 1
ETHICAL TRAITS
Philippines is one of the countries in Southeast Asia where I am from. My formative
years were in this country. I can still remember all the people that inspired and shaped me in the
way that I am today. During my high school days, one of the people that amazed me the most is
Jose Rizal. Jose Rizal is Philippines National Hero. His name is well known and is one of the
topics that were included in my high school curriculum. During my studies on his works and
Philosophy, I was deeply amazed at his passion to serve the Public and Society. He displayed a
great sense of integrity during his captivity and execution. Serving the public and society is about
one’s sense of great responsibility to serve the community as a whole. Acting with Integrity
shows the importance of one’s personal beliefs and values that influences others to do the same
(Managing Business Ethics by Trevino, L.K, & Nelson, K.A. (2017) pages 50). Rizal displayed
these traits until his last breath.
ETHICAL CONDUCT
Service to the Public and Society
Unlike most Heroes, Jose Rizal was not a soldier, but he fought for the county’s freedom
against the Spaniard’s oppression through the use of his pen. Rizal’s main idea was to reform the
Philippine Society by uncovering corruption among friars and other members of the religious
orders through his writings. He exposed their wrongdoings and abuse toward the Filipinos by
writing multiple novels and essays. His most popular novel, Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not)
and El Filibusterismo (The Reign of Greed), a sequel novel to Noli Me Tangere, was the 2 major
novels that opened the eyes of the Filipinos against the Spaniard’s abuse. He also encouraged
, young Filipinos by awakening their minds through education. During his time, local education
was under the control and oppression of the friars, it is their way of keeping Filipinos in the dark
from their corruption and wrongdoings. Rizal led young Filipinos to go to other countries to get
the proper education they deserved.
Acts of Integrity
Jose Rizal was a peace-loving person. He believed that freedom can be achieved
peacefully and that a pen is mightier than a sword. He supported non-violent actions, but still
was accused of having ties to the rebellious acts of other Filipino groups that are against the
Spaniard’s oppression. He was captured and exiled. The Spaniards attempted to force him into
admitting his involvement with the rebellious act in exchange for his freedom which Rizal did
not take. I can still remember when my teacher at that time narrated to us the event of his
execution. She said that when Rizal was sentenced to be exiled by a firing squad, he requested
not to be blindfolded in order to face his executioners, but this request was denied. My teacher
also said that according to history, the doctor who took his pulse rate and vital signs were so
amazed to find him calm and unafraid just minutes before his execution. He also managed to
turn and faced his executioner upon hearing the commander’s order to fire. These episodes in his
life exemplified a great sense of self-integrity and gained him the respect and admiration from
his fellow compatriots even after his death.
DILEMMA ANALYSIS
The scenario given was about me as a Sales Representative for a medical device
company. I was given the ethical dilemma of losing my job by divulging the potential side
effects of an artificial knee device. The side effect of the artificial knee device can cause a small
percentage of lethal infection for patients. Divulging this information will be against the
nondisclosure agreement that I signed when I was hired for the position. Below will be an
approach from both the Consequentialist and Deontological perspective.
