For as long as I can remember, reading has been a part of my life. As a four and five-
year-old child, my mother would become very frustrated with me when she would walk into my
room to check me while I was supposed to be a sleeping and to find me reading book. As I got
older, my love for reading did not lessen; in fact, I spent many elementary school summer breaks
reading my children’s encyclopedia set. Reading was fun and easy for me and I loved to learn
new things. In the fourth grade, I was introduced to something called a book report. While I had
never before recounted my reading in written form, for most of that year I was successful in
creating competent book reports. Unfortunately, towards the end of the school year, I made the
fateful decision to read The Black Stallion by Walter Farley. The fourth grade provided me with
important literacy development by teaching me the difference between movies and written work,
the importance of finishing what I start, helping me find my own voice in order to avoid
plagiarizing.
Fourth grade, for me, was the year of the horse. I was not into the Chinese zodiac but I
was into reading about horses. That year my reading included Black Beauty by Anna Sewell and
Man O’War by Walter Farley; I had little difficulty finishing those books and writing book
reports on each. I had recently watched the movie adaptation of The Black Stallion and decided
that would be my next challenge. After a couple of chapters, I realized that the book and the
movie had very different tempos. The movie seemed so exciting and the book was much less so
to my young mind. The book seemed interminable and with the exciting images of the movie
still playing in my young mind, I struggled to incorporate this dissonance between the book and
