I’m sitting, staring at the waves as they crash in front of me on the beach.
At this point I’m so far past the point where people like to walk that it’s so
quiet, I can’t even hear the kids screaming or see them building their
sandcastles. In the sand there are footprints, but only mine and I can see them
being swept away by the relentless tide.
The water is dark but clear enough to see the dark green seaweed
swaying side to side along the surface. I watch as the seaweed is tormented by
the crashing of the waves, over and over again. It’s late, almost 11 at this time.
I had left my phone back at the resort and my watch was bundled up in a bag
back at the beach house. It’s late, cold and besides the light shining down from
the full moon, it’s dark.
I wonder if they’ve noticed I’m gone. I didn’t tell anyone where I was
going, besides mumbling that I needed to use the restroom. I snuck out the door
and headed directly down the steps to the still warm beachy sand. Behind me, I
could hear bottles being opened and the warm laughter that I just could stand to
be around any longer.
Everyone was having a great time, enjoying each other’s company,
laughing, drinking, and having fun while I felt the need to walk away, and I still
don’t know just why. I know everyone there and I like all of them but yet
there’s this voice in my head, tugging away at me saying “Shanel, this isn’t
you”. Everyone there is successful, and have achieved so many things but what
