UNIT 29 – UNDERSTANDING RETAIL
Unit 29 (M1) Task 2 Report – Compare the function of formats
and locations in retailing.
In this task, I’ll be comparing four retail formats including the following: Westfield
Stratford, Gallions Reach Shopping Park, Bicester Village and Box Park Shoreditch.
Bicester Village is an example of shopping outlet which is primarily located in the
Oxford area near the Oxford town centre. Bicester Village sells a wide variety of
clothes at highly expensive prices due to the fact they sell brands like, Fred Perry,
Polo Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. A lot of customers will be going to the shopping
outlet as it is quite near the Oxford area. In addition
to clothing brands Bicester village includes food
outlets, hands free shopping, valet parking,
shopping packages and luggage drops. Examples of
the food outlets in Bicester Village include Shan
Shui, Café Wolseley, restaurant & café and Le Pain
Quotidien. The pop ups sell food from doughnuts to
pizza for customers to enjoy. Although the price of
clothing and jewellery are high in Bicester Village the
food is sold at an average price of £8 – £30 not
including multiple courses. Opening hours of the
village are 9:00 to 20:00 from Monday –
Wednesday, 9:00 – 21:00 Thursday – Saturday and
10:00 to 19:00 on Sunday. Their opening hours are that of a traditional retail store
however the closing hours are later than traditional retail closing hours of 18:00pm.
The functions which are performed at Bicester Village is that they function the retail
services in the outdoor space. They are many shops in
the village such as Calvin Klein, Gucci, Adidas and
many other top brands. The reason Bicester Village is
located in the middle of the United Kingdom, which is a
great place to be because of the prime location and the
fact that it covers many motorways which makes it
convenient for their shoppers to reach easily. The
greater benefit is its location, which covers most of the
United Kingdom and is approachable from people all
over the United Kingdom. The reason is because of the
motorway that makes it easier for its people to visit and
those who use public transport can take the train
straight to Bicester Shopping Centre, hence making it
very convenient for all types of people. Due to long
distance and popularity of the shopping village, there
are many traffic jams in that area and people will be stuck in traffic, hence affecting
their mood. Another weakness in the weather; if the weather is bad then the people
would rather stay at home and then come for shopping for such a far distance.
