The first factor to affect overall communication we will discuss is the barrier of
Sensory Impairment. For example, if a service user was to have hearing
impairments this would majorly affect a whole avenue in which most people
naturally communicate through...speaking! This means the health care
professionals and staff will have to find a more effective alternative way to get
information across to the service user.

Luckily, in this day and age, there are many aids that have been created to
help effectively get a person’s point across to those who cannot hear the
information. For example, there are human aids such as speaking with a louder
voice or using voice-activated technology. This is very helpful to those with
partial hearing loss or those who use hearing aids, however, those with
complete hearing loss will still be unable to communicate through this avenue
and the health care professionals will have to use an alternative way. Lip
reading is a good way of communicating with the hearing impaired but again,
some people may not know how to communicate this way. Sign language
would be used by many people with this impairment so this is a good way to
communicate people who are hearing impaired because sign language is to
those who understand it is the same as speaking to that person. You would
get your point across just as if you were speaking to them. A con to this form of
communication is that not many people who have their hearing know how to
understand sign language or to use it to communicate with the hearing
impaired. This means that there is a blockage in the communication. Pictures
and writing information down is also a good way to get your thoughts across
because they will be able to know exactly what you are saying and will be able
to respond in the same way. Unfortunately, if the patient has further learning
disabilities, this could mean they are unable to process the pictures and words
you are writing meaning they will not be able to understand the message you
are trying to get them to understand.

Overall, the best way for communication to be carried out in this situation is
by the use of an interpreter. This is because the interpreter is a professional
and can understand the message you want the patient to receive and can
convey that message to the patient in a way that meets their individual needs.
