A brief summary of the main points in the spec. These notes outline the events in the cell cycle and go into depth about the stages of mitosis and meiosis. I recommend using these alongside a revision guide or textbook when revising. If any mistakes are found let me know!

Cells divide for There are 3 main stages to the cell cycle:
growth and repair • Interphase - ce preparation
with divisions • Metaphase - division of the nucleus
happening in every • Cytokinesis - splitting of the cytoplasm
cell all the time
The cell spends 95% of it's time in interphase where it is prepared for division
Cells leave the cell cycle permanently due to:
• Di erentiation - specialised ce s cannot divide and so leave the ce cycle permanentl
• DNA damage - damaged ce s cannot divide as they aren't viable for replication and so
permanently leave the ce cycl
• Age - ce s can divide a maximum number of times. These ce s become senescent (dormant) and
can be linked to age related i nesses E.G. Arthritis and cancer
