Protonen (Z = atoomnummer) en neutronen (N) in de kern en elektronen
rondom de kern.
Massagetal A = N + Z
Isotopen zijn kernen met hetzelfde aantal protonen, maar eenverschillen
aantal neutronen. Z is gelijk en A is verschillend.
Sommige isotopen hebben instabiele kernen. Instabiele kernen vervallen
spontaan en zenden daarbij radioactieve straling uit.

Een gas kan licht absorberen waarvan de golflengten overeenkomen met de
golflengten die de atomen, waaruit het gas bestaat, ook kunnen uitzenden.
In het absorptiespectrum zijn donkere lijnen te zien, die
fraunhoferlijnen worden genoemd.
Wanneer een gas voldoende wordt verhit, gaan de atomen in het gas licht
uitzenden met bepaalde golflengten, die zijn te zien in het
emissielijnenspectrum.
Het foto-elektrisch effect is het vrijkomen van elektronen uit een stof
door het opnemen van fotonen (lichtdeeltjes). Dit gebeurt door middel van
elektromagnetische straling.
Elektronen wisselen van schil.
- Absorptie: schil naar buiten
- Emissie: schil naar binnen
Dracht is hoe ver de straling door de lucht komt.
