De drie sectoren van de economie in een land – landbouw,
industrie en diensten – ontwikkelen zich elk op een andere
manier. De landbouw (akkerbouw, veeteelt, tuinbouw en
bosbouw) is steeds meer voedsel gaan produceren om de
groeiende wereldbevolking te voeden. Toch werken er
steeds minder mensen in de landbouw door mechanisatie.
3.3
Daarnaast hebben boeren door intensivering meer land in gebruik genomen en
tegelijkertijd de opbrengst per hectare of per dier verhoogd. Dat kon door
moderne irrigatie, kunstmest, specialisatie, genetische modificatie en
schaalvergroting. De landbouw in de (semi)periferie bleef eerst achter, maar
maakte vanaf 1960 een inhaalslag met de groene revolutie.
3.4
De zware en lichte industrie maken halffabrikaten en producten. De industrie
speelt een belangrijke rol in de economische ontwikkeling van een land of
gebied. Fabrieken vestigen zich graag op plaatsen met grondstoffen, een goede
infrastructuur, ruimte, voldoende geschikt personeel (arbeidsmarkt), een
afzetmarkt en andere instellingen en bedrijven. In de loop der tijd veranderen
vestigingsfactoren: fabrieken vestigen zich bijvoorbeeld steeds vaker buiten de
stad. Multinationals vestigen hun productieafdelingen in lagelonenlanden of in
speciale economische zones. De industrie die
in centrumlanden achterblijft, is sterk
gemechaniseerd en gerobotiseerd en het
personeel dat er werkt heeft vaak veel
kennis nodig.
