The Plot. Tell in a few sentences what happens in the story and how it ends.
In the beginning Violet Markey and Theodore Finch meet on the ledge of the bell tower of
their school, both contemplating suicide. They come to understand and care for each other.
Theodore deals with mental illness, while Violet struggles with the loss of her sister.
On the anniversary of her sister’s birthday, she tries to kill herself, but Theodore talks her
out of it. The students who had seen what had happened thought the opposite happened
and neither one of them tries to correct them. He reaches out to her through Facebook and
they soon become friends.
In school Theodore asks Violet to be his partner for a class project to wander Indiana and
find tourist attractions throughout their state. The pair explore Indiana and beyond in the
months that follow. However, as Violet's world grows, Theodore's world begins to shrink.
He is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Violet is one of the reasons that the bleak moments in
his life seemed temporary. None of his friends or family really felt that there is something
wrong with him and feel that he is just being himself. After she tries to help him, he goes on
the run. As she goes looking for him, she finds his car. It is later presumed that he has
drowned himself.
The Setting. Where and when does the story take place?
The setting of the story is the imaginary town of Bartlett in the US state of Indiana. The most
important scenes take place in the vicinity of the town. When Violet and Theodore are
looking for interesting places in the state of Indiana for their class project.
The story will take place in the years 2010-2020. It’s a story that uses a lot of mobile phones
and computers. The story is about a month or four and is chronologically told with some
flashbacks. The story begins in January and ends in June.
