M1 – D1: Discuss the nature-nurture debate in relation to the
development of an individual and valuate how nature and nurture may
affect the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of
two stages of the development of an individual
The nature-nurture debate is based on nature being the way an
individual is born (genetics, family factors) while nurture is how an
individual is influenced and has learnt.
For example, the celebrity Angelina Jolie had a difficult childhood
since her parents divorced while she was young. Both the parents
were in the entertainment industry, so when her parents
separated she had to travel around with her mum for work. By
experiencing and watching her mum doing her job Angelina
developed this love for art and acting. This is nurture because the
actress started growing an interest after being brought up in
certain environments by her mother which was also an actress.
The divorce happened at a young age leaving her with a single
parent which it affected Angelina overall development.

During adolescence from age 10 to 18 years old, Angelina found it hard to emotionally relate to
people and she used to suffer from depression, which led to misuse of substances, self-harm and
suicide attempts. Using drugs and suffering from depression negatively affected her physically in
different ways as it reduced her appetite, made her develop insomnia and form scarring from self-
harm which she enjoyed at that time since she felt as if it helped her feel some type of emotions
such as pain.
Intellectually Angelina went to different schools giving her a varied background learning new skills
and expanding her knowledge. Starting from a theatre school because of the love she had for
acting that helped her improve and learn how to act, to moving to a school in Beverly Hills to an
alternative school. The alternative school helped her find her identity as a ‘punk outsider’.
Socially her relationship with her father was very hard because he left her at a young age, which
affected her approach with people in general. As a teenager, since other students harassed her
when she used to study at the school in Beverly Hills because of her appearance as she used to
have braces, be very thin and wear glasses it made it hard for her to develop friendships.
Nurture usually leads to traumas and difficulties long term if not taken care of.

A nature example could be Angelina Jolie skin colour and the genetic mutation that enhanced her
risk of getting breast cancer. The skin colour is inherited by her parents while the genetic mutation
was inherited by the mother since she died because of breast cancer.
During adulthood from age 19 to 45 years old, she undertook preventive double mastectomy,
which is the removal of breast tissue that can develop breast cancer.
Since nature is genetics the way it affects development varies.
Adult Angelina was physically affected by the genetic mutation as she underwent a removal of all
the breast tissues that could develop in breast cancer. This procedure can make the patient go
through loss of normal breast functions, change in body image and early menopause. However is
