Abstract

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD, has been misdiagnosed in children over the

years. In St. Louis there was a study that was done with children that was originally diagnosed

with ADHD, thirty percent of this children did not meet the criteria for ADHD. (Haber, 2003)

Misdiagnosis

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has been one of the poor understood disorder over the

past few decades. (Ford-Jones, 2015) In Germany, there is a lot of information for school aged

children and being misdiagnosed with ADHD. (Schwandt & Wuppermann, 2016) School age

children already have difficulty sitting still and focusing in school so it is very hard to

determined whether or no a child has the disorder. If a child does become diagnosed with it there

are numerous medications that psychiatrist prescribe to “help” but because the ADHD is

misunderstood, majority of the time the medications prescribed are not effective. We need to

fully understand and get all the information before slapping a title on a child. “The goal is to

inform the most promising practices to ensure that through careful, thorough assessment, the

appropriate children receive such treatment and experience positive outcomes” (Ford-Jones,

2015)
