Colitis is a chronic digestive disease characterized by inflammation of the

inner lining of the colon. There are different types of colitis, and treatment

varies depending on what type you have, but they are all treated with some form

of anti-infectives which is a general term that encompasses anti-bacterials,

antibiotics, antifungals, anti-protozoans and antivirals. Vancomycin is used to

treat colitis inflammation of the intestine caused by certain bacteria) that may

occur after antibiotic treatment. Vancomycin is in a class of medications called

glycopeptide antibiotics. The use of the treatment is to stop the reproducing of

bacteria by destroying the bacteria walls, in thus weakening bacteria in the

intestines. Vancomycin will not kill bacteria or treat infections in any other part

of the body when taken by mouth. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel

disease (IBD) that causes inflammation and ulcers or sores in your digestive

tract. Ulcerative colitis affects the innermost lining of your large intestine /colon

and rectum. Symptoms usually develop over time, rather than suddenly.
