STAR is an educational curriculum developed specifically for students on the
autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and is used by school districts across the country,
including many Autism Support Classrooms in the School District of Philadelphia
(STAR, 2020).
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopment disorder that is described by
problems with social communication and social interaction alongside limited and rhythmic
patterns in behaviors, activities, and interests. To meet the diagnostic criteria for ASD
according to DSM-5, “a child must have persistent deficits in each of three areas of social
communication and interaction plus at least two of four types of restricted, repetitive
behaviors” (CDC, 2020).
The types of ASD include Classical Autism which is the broadest and most
predominant form of autism. Asperger’s which classify individuals who fall under the high
functioning autism spectrum. Pervasive Development Disorder which is used to classify
people who do not fit into any specific category of Autism. Childhood Disintegrative
Disorder, known as Heller’s Syndrome; usually only affects toddlers and preschoolers. Rett’s
, Syndrome occurs only in girls and is the only form of Autism Spectrum Disorder that can be
diagnosed and medically confirmed.
The STAR Program (Strategies for Teaching based on Autism Research,) was found
by the 2001 National Research Council and uses several of the evidence-based practices that
are recognized in the 2009 National Standards Report and 2014 National Professional
Development Report.
The specific target of focus are preschool and elementary ages who are diagnosed with
autism. STAR is a research based, comprehensive curriculum that is centered around the
principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). ABA is an effective method for teaching a
range of skills to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Research proves that it has
positive effects on the behavior of children with ASD. ABA is also approved and funded by
the U.S. Surgeon General’s office, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the National
Institute of Child Health and Human Development, among other organizations and agencies.
The Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring state that “ADDM reports
have consistently noted that more White children are identified with ASD than Black or
Hispanic children (CDC, 2020). Prior studies have indicated that the stigma and lack of access
to healthcare facilities are due to the non-citizenship, low-income, and non-English speaking
individuals as a primary language. These are the possible obstacles to identify children with
ASD particularly among Hispanic individuals. The disparity between Black and Hispanic
individuals with ASD in comparison to White individuals suggests that they may not be
receiving the services, or the support needed.
There have been no concerns or limitations recorded from STAR that is apparent in
regarding the effective provision of assessment and intervention strategies across
sociocultural groups. Although there were no apprehensions that were recorded from STAR,
