The Role of the Brain

Southern New Hampshire University

PSY 300: Biopsychology

The cerebellum which controls balance and coordination helps me with getting out of bed

in the morning. The cerebellum is also responsible for coordinated movements such as sitting up

in bed, putting my legs over the side of the bed, standing up, and walking. The frontal lobe is

responsible for helping me make the decision to get out of bed and decide what needs to be done

during the day. The temporal lobe is responsible for my speech when I have to communicate with

my children or other adults throughout the day. The temporal cortex is where auditory feedback

is processed and how my body reacts to the auditory as well as visual feedback is determined by

the tectum. While driving to the store, the occipital lobe is responsible for visual perception.

While studying or writing a paper, the hippocampus is involved with learning and memory. The

hypothalamus maintains the body’s internal balance which lets me know when I need to eat or

sleep.

The hippocampus is a complex brain structure that is embedded deep in the temporal

lobe. It plays a major role in memory and learning. The hippocampus is a vulnerable structure

that can be damaged by a wide variety of stimuli. It is unclear what role the hippocampus plays

in seizures, but Anand Dhikav (2012) state that it is unknown if epilepsy is caused by

hippocampal damage or if repeated seizures cause damage to the hippocampus. However, having

a better understanding of the role that the hippocampus plays in seizures may give doctors a

better chance to treat their patients who have seizures.
