The Impact of Medication Errors in Healthcare
For numerous patients the most horrifying part of being in a hospital setting is being
vulnerable and trusting others to regulate life altering choices. According to the National
Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting Prevention (NCCMERP), a medical
error is defined as any avoidable situation that may cause or lead to inappropriate medication
use or patient harm while the medication is in the control of the health care professional,
patient, or consumer (NCCMERP, 2020). In a recent study, medical errors have been the third
leading cause of death in the United States. Medical errors have projected 251,000 deaths yearly
in the United States (Anderson J.G., & Abrahamson K., 2017). Can you envision what it would
be like for a patient to have a stranger to enter their room in a hospital and start administering
medication? As a health care provider, medical errors have caused advantages and
disadvantages in client care concerning health care regulations, appropriate use of technology,
and most importantly, the livelihood of all patients.
Regulations of Medication Errors
Medical errors can occur anywhere in the healthcare system such as hospitals, health
centers, surgical procedure rooms from doctors, nurses, surgeons, up to administration. In
healthcare facilities, medical errors can arise through miscommunication of drug orders, faults in
medication, and even test results. Some healthcare facilities have programs that are intended to

serve as a supplementary legal protection for providers. In 2015, the state of Iowa implemented a
law referred to as the Candor law that offers legal protection before obligating to engage with
impaired patients (Lind, et al., 2018). Although this law doesn’t protect the patients’ legality
rights it does prove to lessen any form of liability and resentment from the patients and at the
same time increases trust while improving relations with patients, nurses and physicians.
Advantages of Using Electronic Medical Records
In hospitals, electronic medical records (EMRs) have been proven to be very helpful for
the busy nurses and physicians. Electronic medical records are running in hospitals by specific
software applications to avoid medical errors for nurses and to aide in efficient and harmless
patient care. Hospitals take advantage of software’s that are used to order medication which
saves time for the busy nurse and pharmacists. EMRs help eliminate medical errors because it
avoids the problem of incorrectly reading physicians hand scribed orders (Sushil & Raziuddin,
2018). With many advantages, there are several disadvantages of using EMRs.
Disadvantages of Using Electronic Medical Records
Disadvantages usually occur amongst hospital staff due to the lack of training on how to
use the medication machines and patient identifications. There’s been multiple situations where
nurses have mistakenly administered the wrong medication because of similar letters in name or
other instances where medication administering machines aren’t properly secured causing
patients to receive incorrect medication, which could result in death. At Saint Vincent Hospital
after a major medication error was reported, it was discovered that one-third of the 90 surgical
staff members never attended an education session on how to properly perform patient
identification (Kowalczyk, 2016). Minor mistakes like this causes patients to receive wrong
