The Cherokee Tribe believes in honoring the past by knowledge of one’s
ancestors and living the Cherokee culture. The Cherokee People first encountered
Europeans when Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto arrived in the new world in
1540 (Cherokee.org, 2021). Some members of the Cherokee tribe sought to
conform to the white culture of the European settlers on the East Coast before
being relocated to Oklahoma (Joyce, 2006). This gave those that assimilated a
chance to prosper economically and take on American culture characteristics.
European missionaries were successful in converting many Cherokees to
Christianity.
Cherokee did hold on to core values such as spirituality which creates a
sense of hope and group harmony in communication. The Cherokee people also
hold individual integrity, perseverance, courage, respect, trust, honor, and humility
in high regard based on the past hardship their ancestors experienced over time
(Cherokee Preservation Organization, 2021). Cherokee culture is not frozen in
