The battle of the Britian is als het ware in te delen in vijf fasen.Commandant Herman Göring wilde de Britse RAF uit te lokken tot een gevecht maar
generaal Hugh Dowding weigerde toe te happen.
Er werd een plan gemaakt om Groot-Brittanie te veroveren: operatie zeeleeuw. Met dit
plan zouden 20 groepen vliegtuigen langs een brede strook op de zuidkust van GB
landen.
Hermann Göring overtuigd dat operatie zeeleeuw met behulp van de Luftwaffe kon slagen,
Duitsland was immers oppermachtig in de lucht.
Deel 1: beginfase: Slag om het kanaal, 10 juli - 12 augustus 1940
De eerste fase van the battle of Britain vond vooral plaats boven het Kanaal. Hierbij
probeerden de Duitse jachtvliegtuigen en Stuka bommenwerpers zoveel mogelijk schade
aan te richten aan de schepen op het water. Zo wilde Duitsland Groot-Brittanië van
voedsel, olie en benzine afsnijden. Hierbij werden de Duitsers door de Engelse
jachtvliegtuigen, waaronder de beroemde Spitfires, opgewacht en die op hun beurt zo veel
mogelijk Duitse vliegtuigen naar beneden probeerden te halen.
Deze gevechten waren voor Duitsland een goede manier om de sterkte van de RAF te
testen.

Half augustus verplaatste het gevecht zich van het Kanaal naar het Britse luchtruim.
