FOSSIELE BRANDSTOFFEN
Fossiele brandstoffen hebben een hoge verbrandingswarmte: bij
verbranding van 1kg/1m^3 komt er veel warmte vrij. Aardolie is een
mengsel van duizenden stoffen, daarom wordt de olie eerst
gescheiden in mengsels met minder stoffen, fracties, dit noem je
gefractioneerde destillatie. De naftafractie wordt verder bewerkt
door kraken en reformen tot de gewenste koolwaterstof. Reformen
betekent dat de onvertakte alkanen en cycloalkenen in nafta onder
hoge temperatuur en druk worden omgezet in vertakte alkanen en
aromaten. Bij kraken wordt een groot koolwaterstofmolecuul
omgezet in een alkeen en een alkaan:
Bij de verbranding van fossiele brandstoffen ontstaan CO 2, SO3 en
NOx. Koolstofdioxide levert een grote bijdrage aan het broeikaseffect.
Vermindering kan door opslag of energiebesparing. SO 2 wordt
verwijderd met rookgasontzwavelingsinstallaties en NO x met
driewegkatalysatoren en DeNOx-installaties.
