Eigenschappen → - één laag gepigmenteerde cellen
- ondersteunt de fotoreceptoren
- los verbonden met sensorische retina
Functies → - bloed-retina barrière (tight junctions)
- opslag en transport vitamine A
- lichtabsorptie
- fagocytose van resten van fotoreceptoren
- regeneratie van pigmentcellen
RPE heeft 2 soorten pigment cellen:
- Lipofuscine
- Melanine (donkerbruin / zwart pigment)
- Na geboorte wordt geen (nieuw) pigment meer aangemaakt
,Membraan van Bruch → Functies:
- Scheiding RPE en choroidea.
- RPE gebruikt Bruch om afvalstoffen uit te scheiden.
- Veranderingen in structuur lijken belangrijk bij pathogenese
van verschillende aandoeningen.

(bovenste van 5 lagen)

Bruch's membraan wordt dikker naarmate mensen ouder worden.
Choroidea:
Loopt van posterieure deel van Uvea, gaat over in ora serrata. Dikker ter plaatse van de macula.

1. Bruch & Choriocapillaris (geeft voeding aan RPE en het buitenste deel van de retina).
2. Sattler's laag (vasculair, kleine bloedvaten)
3. Haller's laag (vasculair, grote bloedvaten (vortex))
4. Suparchoroid
5. Lamine fusca (pigment)
Toevoer:
- Posterior ciliary arteries (PCA)
- Ophthalmic artery (takken)
Afvoer:
- Vortex vene
Sympathisch en parasympathische innervatie door
perivasculaire plexus.
- Verantwoordelijk voor 85% van de doorbloeding
van het oog.
- Voorziet de retina van voedingsstoffen.
- Sterk gepigmenteerd (lamina fusca).
- Thermoregulatie.
- Retinale positie in relatie tot choroideale dikte,
productie van groeifactoren.
Choroidea speelt grote rol in pathologie:
- Myopie
- CSR / PEL
- Diabetes Mellitus
- AMD
- Retinitis pigmentosa
