“Whenever we use language, we reflect who we are”

Introduction:

My linguistic background
My name is Amy and I was born and raised in the South of Johannesburg in an area
called Robertsham in Gauteng, South Africa. I grew up in an English-speaking
household, both my parents were English speaking, therefore English is my mother
tongue. I went to a bilingual secondary school. I had Afrikaans as a first additional
language, which encouraged me to not only understand Afrikaans but to speak it
more frequently.

I have travelled to various parts of South Africa such as KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo
and the Free State, here I have learned some phrases of different languages such
as Zulu and Sepedi and improved on languages I’m already familiar with such as
Afrikaans. I have also learned about new cultures and languages through my friends
when I hang out with them and their families or when I travel with them, work
colleagues as some of them speak Afrikaans and strangers I have encountered
along the way whether it be at restaurants or shops, however with regards to the
aforementioned statement I believe that my language identity as an English speaking
person has not been influenced and has remained intact and that will never change
as I’m proud to be English, maybe as I go along with life my language identity may
be influenced, but I do believe I have learned from the other cultures and languages
and that I have embraced them.

Body:
“Language is a process”

Language identity:
Language identity gives humans a sense of belonging and defines who we are as
individuals and our uniqueness. Our language identity allows us to explore and show
those around us who we really are deep inside and it lets us express our cultural
backgrounds and how we were raised and influenced by the people around us.
