The objective of this paper is to analyze the article, Childhood Trauma and Its Relation
to Chronic Depression in Adulthood. This paper will identify whether the research is a
quantitative or qualitative study. Additionally, the paper will evaluate the sampling method of
the study by describing the sampling method, describing the generalizability or the transferability
of the research findings, discussing the limitations the article, and discussing recommendations
to improve the sampling plan of the study.
Research Design
The article I selected is titled, Childhood Trauma and Its Relation to Chronic Depression
in Adulthood (Negele et al., 2015). This study explored incidence, degree, and connections of
trauma experienced in childhood in a chronically depressed adult sample diagnosed in
accordance with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-
IV) criteria (Negele et al., 2015). This is a quantitative study since the goal of the study was
examining relationships between several variables (prevalence of recalled childhood trauma in
chronically depressed patients and the relationship between trauma type and depression), the
researchers used statistical methods (multiple regression analysis), subjects completed
questionnaires or standardized instruments for measurement (the Childhood Trauma
Questionnaire, a self-report measure of traumatic experiences in childhood), and the study
included a large number of subjects (349 chronically depressed patients) (Memmott, 2020;
Negele et al., 2015). The study also used a longitudinal design conducted between 2007 and
2013 (Negele et al., 2015). The study merged a naturalistic and randomized-controlled trial
, (RCTs), and utilized an experimental design (Negele et al., 2015).
Sampling Method Used in the Study
Following the DSM-IV criteria for chronically depressed patients, the sample population
was recruited from the German Long-term Treatment of Chronically Depressed Patients
Depression Study between 2007 and 2013 (Negele et al., 2015). A proportionate stratified
random sampling procedure was used. Participants were sampled separately within broad strata
(Elwood, 1982). Cases were stratified based on variables that could possibility distort the
research, such as gender (Negele et al., 2015). A participant’s gender may be a confounding
variable that relates to treatment success (Yegidis et al., 2018). Individuals between age 21 and
60 were included in the study (Negele et al., 2015). To take part in the study, participants had to
meet DSM-IV criteria for diagnosis of a major depressive episode (lasting a minimum of 12
month), or a dysthymia (lasting a minimum of 24 months) at the intake of the study (Negele et
al., 2015). In addition, individuals had to have a Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptoms
(QIDS-C, clinician edition) score higher than 9 and a BDI-2 score higher than 17 (Negele et al.,
2015). Participant were excluded from the study if they have experienced current or prior
psychotic episodes, substance use issues, dementia or decreases in mental functioning, “a
borderline, schizotypal, paranoid, schizoid, or antisocial personality disorder, acute suicidal
intentions, and/or a severe acute or chronic somatic disease” (Negele et al., 2015). The LAC
Depression Study included a total of 402 patients, but only 349 patients were included due to
their CTQ results (Negele et al., 2015). The average age of the study was 40, and the
female/male ratio paralleled clinically depressed populations (113 male and 236 female) (Negele
et al., 2015).
Generalizability and Transferability of Sampling Method
