Perspective & Narration
1. Explain how the story is narrated. (1pt)
Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit een ik-perspectief. Het ene hoofdstuk wordt verteld vanuit
Sephy en het andere hoofdstuk weer vanuit Callum, zo wisselt het zich steeds af.

2. How well does the reversal of perspective (black and white are swapped) in the novel
work in making you see things from another perspective? (2pt)
In het boek worden blanke mensen gediscrimineerd, dus blanke mensen zien het vanuit het
perspectief hoe het voor zwarte mensen in de echte wereld is of is geweest. Dat vond ik in
het begin wel verwarrend tijdens het lezen, omdat het ook lastig voor te stellen is. Toch
heeft het niet eens heel veel invloed gehad op hoe ik het verhaal zag, omdat het zo ver weg
lijkt en je het daarom vanaf een afstand ‘bekijkt’ als je het leest. Ik was me er niet heel erg
van bewust wie zwart en wie blank was, alleen dat Callum en de mensen die dezelfde
huidskleur hadden als hem gediscrimineerd werden.

Discrimination & racism
3. Describe what had happened to Lynette to cause her to live in her own world. (2pt)
Lynette had een vriendje die zwart was. Ze zijn toen samen een keer gediscrimineerd en
aangevallen, waarna ze nooit meer de oude is geworden. Ze heeft psychische problemen en
denkt in haar hoofd dat ze zwart is.

4. Explain what Lynette did after the family fight when she walked out of the house, and
why she did it. (2pt)
Ze heeft zelfmoord gepleegd, maar op een manier waardoor het lijkt alsof het een ongeluk
was. Het moest lijken op een ongeluk, omdat haar ouders hun reputatie dan niet minder
zou worden. De zelfmoord pleegde ze, omdat ze niet meer wilde leven in een wereld waarin
ze niet goed genoeg was vanwege haar huidskleur. Ze had nog wel een brief achtergelaten
voor Callum, omdat ze vond dat hij het recht had om de waarheid te weten.

5. Sephy at one point has a hard time sleeping. What does she decide to do to make
sleeping easier and the pain of the mess her life is at times to ease away a little? (1pt)
Ze begint alcohol te drinken.
